About this course

Astrophysics is the branch of physics concerned with the nature, behaviour, and evolution of objects and phenomena in the universe, from planets and stars to galaxies, black holes, and the structure of space-time itself. It applies the principles and methods of physics to questions of extraordinary scale and strangeness, from how stars burn and die to the origin and ultimate fate of the universe. Astrophysics sits at the frontier of human knowledge, where some of the most fundamental questions about existence remain unanswered, and where the tools of observation and theory are advancing rapidly.

At the University of Liverpool, this five-year full-time degree includes a year abroad, during which you will study at one of the university's partner institutions around the world, following a combination of culture-related and discipline-specific modules. The year abroad adds genuine breadth to the programme, exposing you to different research environments and academic traditions while developing your independence and adaptability. The main programme develops rigorous foundations in physics alongside specialist study in astrophysics, covering topics such as stellar physics, galactic structure, cosmology, observational techniques, and the computational methods used to model astronomical systems.

You will develop the quantitative and analytical skills that both physics and astrophysics demand, including proficiency in mathematical modelling and data analysis.

You will build the scientific rigour and problem-solving capability that physics training instils, alongside specialist knowledge of the universe and the techniques used to investigate it. These are capacities that are valued well beyond astrophysics itself.

Graduates from astrophysics programmes pursue careers in scientific research, data science, space technology, the defence and communications industries, finance, software engineering, and scientific consultancy. The quantitative and analytical skills of a physics degree are in sustained demand across the economy. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate research in astrophysics, physics, or related fields.
