Audiology

Audiology is the healthcare profession dedicated to the assessment and management of hearing loss and related disorders of the auditory system. Given that hearing loss is one of the most prevalent sensory disabilities in the world, with global demand for audiologists consistently on the rise, it is a profession with both genuine clinical importance and strong career prospects. Audiologists work with patients of all ages, from newborns screened at birth to elderly adults managing age-related hearing change, and they use a sophisticated range of diagnostic and rehabilitative tools to assess hearing, fit hearing aids, and manage conditions such as tinnitus and auditory processing disorders.

At Leeds, this three-year full-time programme is accredited by the relevant professional body and provides the clinical and scientific grounding needed to work as a registered audiologist. You will study the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, the psychophysics of hearing, diagnostic audiological assessment, hearing aid technology and fitting, paediatric audiology, and the psychology of hearing loss and rehabilitation. Clinical placements are woven throughout the programme, giving you supervised practice in real clinical settings alongside your academic study.

Graduates of audiology programmes register with the Health and Care Professions Council and work in NHS audiology departments, private hearing care clinics, and specialist centres for deaf education and cochlear implantation. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study to advance their clinical expertise, and the discipline has a strong research culture with active academic programmes in hearing science and rehabilitation.
