Audiology

Audiology is the healthcare science that investigates hearing, balance, and the disorders affecting these systems. It is a discipline where technical precision and compassionate patient care are equally essential: audiologists use sophisticated instruments to assess how the ear and auditory nervous system are functioning, and they work with patients across the lifespan, from newborns identified through hearing screening programmes to older adults managing age-related hearing loss. The demand for audiologists is growing steadily as awareness of hearing health increases and as the UK's population ages.

This three-year full-time programme at University College London prepares you for a career as a registered healthcare science practitioner in audiology. UCL's location in London means clinical placements span some of the busiest and most diverse NHS settings in the country, giving you exposure to a wide range of conditions, patient groups, and clinical approaches. You will study the anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems in depth, learn the principles of acoustics and sound measurement, and become proficient in a comprehensive range of diagnostic procedures.

You will learn to fit and manage hearing devices, support patients in adjusting to hearing loss, and work as part of multidisciplinary teams including ear, nose, and throat specialists, speech and language therapists, and paediatricians.

Graduates from this programme are eligible to register as healthcare scientists with the Health and Care Professions Council and work as audiologists in NHS hospitals and community clinics, in private practice, and in independent audiology chains. Specialist pathways include paediatric audiology, balance and vestibular disorders, cochlear implant programmes, and tinnitus management.
