Bachelor of Theology

Theology is the systematic study of religion, particularly but not exclusively the Christian tradition, encompassing its history, texts, institutions, philosophy, and contemporary significance. It is a discipline that takes religious thought seriously as an intellectual subject, engaging with questions of faith, ethics, metaphysics, and the nature of human experience that have occupied some of the greatest minds in Western and world history. At the same time, theology in a university context is rigorously critical: it does not require personal faith, and it brings the same analytical tools to bear on religious texts and traditions as any other academic discipline.

The four-year full-time Bachelor of Theology at the University of Aberdeen focuses on the study of the Christian faith and tradition in the context of its history, institutions, and its role today. Whether you bring a personal, vocational, or purely intellectual interest in learning more about the Christian faith, or want to explore the world's major religions, Aberdeen provides a scholarly environment with strong research expertise in biblical studies, church history, and systematic theology. You will gain accreditation with the Church of Scotland, and the transferable skills developed through the programme, in critical reading, argument, and ethical reasoning, open a wide range of career options beyond ministry.

With a typical entry tariff of 152 points, the programme attracts students from diverse faith backgrounds and none. Graduates pursue careers in church ministry, chaplaincy, religious education, ethics consultancy, community work, the civil service, journalism, social care, and academic research. Many also go on to postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, or ethics.
