About this course

Biblical studies and classical studies form a natural pairing, sharing a concern with the foundational texts, languages, and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world. The Hebrew and Christian scriptures are among the most influential texts in Western history, shaping art, literature, law, philosophy, and political thought across two thousand years. Classical studies broadens the frame, examining the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome alongside the religious and literary traditions of the ancient Near East.

Together, the two disciplines offer an education in how ideas, narratives, and values are transmitted across time and cultures.

At St Andrews, widely regarded as one of the UK's leading research universities for ancient and religious studies, this four-year full-time programme allows you to explore the Old and New Testaments in depth alongside the literary, historical, and philosophical traditions of the classical world. You will encounter a wide range of texts beyond the canonical scriptures, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Jewish and Christian writings from these periods, situating them in their broader ancient context. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment and extend your engagement with ancient languages, archaeology, or related disciplines elsewhere in Europe or beyond.

The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the high academic expectations of the institution.

Graduates from programmes in biblical and classical studies go on to careers in academia, theology, ministry, education, heritage, archiving, publishing, and the wider arts and humanities sector. The deep reading, critical analysis, and linguistic skills you develop are valued in law, the civil service, journalism, and many other professional fields. Postgraduate study in theology, divinity, ancient history, classical languages, or religious studies is a natural continuation for those wishing to pursue research or academic careers.

A great decision
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of li…

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plenty to do …
