About this course

Biochemistry is the study of life at the molecular level, examining the chemical processes that occur within living organisms and that underpin everything from cell division to the regulation of metabolism, from the action of enzymes to the mechanisms of genetic inheritance. It draws on chemistry, biology and physics to explain how biological molecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates, are structured, how they interact and how they carry out the functions that make life possible. As the molecular basis of medicine becomes ever better understood, biochemistry sits at the centre of many of the most significant advances in healthcare, drug development and biotechnology.

At King's College London this three-year full-time BSc introduces you to all areas of modern biochemistry, developing the practical laboratory skills needed to work in a scientific research environment alongside the theoretical knowledge that underpins them. You will study protein structure and function, molecular genetics, metabolic pathways, cell signalling and a range of specialist topics that reflect the breadth of contemporary biochemistry research. The programme includes a sandwich year option, giving you the opportunity to undertake a substantial placement in a research or industry environment, as well as a year abroad option and work placement opportunities woven into the programme.

Biochemistry graduates are in strong demand across a wide range of sectors. Many go on to careers in pharmaceutical research, drug discovery, biotechnology, clinical biochemistry and the life sciences industry. Others find roles in food science, environmental science, forensic science, science communication and healthcare.

The analytical and laboratory skills the degree develops are also valued in medical research, diagnostics and academic science. The degree provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, structural biology or medicine.
