About this course

Biochemistry explores the molecular processes that underpin all living things, from the replication of DNA and the folding of proteins to the cascades of chemical reactions that allow cells to grow, respond to their environment and generate energy. It is a discipline that sits at the boundary of chemistry and biology, requiring command of both, and its insights are fundamental to our understanding of disease, drug action, nutrition, agriculture and the behaviour of ecosystems. At the University of Hull, this three-year full-time programme builds from the fundamentals of organic and biological chemistry through to advanced topics in molecular biology, enzymology, cell signalling, genomics and structural biology. You will spend significant time in the laboratory, developing practical skills in techniques that are central to biochemical research: chromatography, spectroscopy, cell culture, molecular cloning and the analysis of biological data. Hull's approach emphasises the genuine interface between chemistry and biology, ensuring you develop fluency in both disciplines rather than a superficial knowledge of either.

The degree also provides a strong foundation for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science graduate entry programmes, and for careers in science policy and regulation.
