About this course

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes and molecules that sustain life. It asks how proteins fold and function, how genetic information is encoded and expressed, how cells produce and use energy, how signalling molecules carry messages between cells, and how drugs interact with biological targets. These are not merely academic questions: advances in biochemistry underpin the development of new medicines, vaccines, diagnostic tools, and biotechnologies that affect billions of people.

At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time programme examines how living things are made at the molecular level and how that knowledge can be harnessed to address major global challenges, from medicine and vaccine development to new foods, fuels, and approaches to resisting disease and addressing climate change. You will study molecular biology, genetics and genomics, cell biology, metabolism, enzymology, protein structure and function, and the experimental techniques that biochemists use to investigate living systems, including spectroscopy, chromatography, and molecular cloning. Laboratory work is central to the programme, developing the practical skills that a science career in this area demands.

Biochemistry graduates are employed in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, research institutions, hospitals and clinical laboratories, food and environmental science, and government regulatory bodies. Many proceed to postgraduate study in biochemistry, structural biology, pharmacology, molecular medicine, or related fields, and a significant proportion pursue doctoral research. The degree also provides a strong foundation for further training in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, and the quantitative and analytical skills it develops are valued in science policy, scientific publishing, and consulting roles.
