Biochemistry

Biochemistry sits at the junction of biology and chemistry, asking how living systems work at the molecular level. From the way enzymes catalyse reactions to how DNA is replicated and repaired, the discipline has contributed enormously to our understanding of life, to solving medical problems, and to the discovery and production of safe and effective drugs. It is a subject that combines rigorous experimental science with conceptual thinking about the mechanisms that underpin health and disease.

At the University of Manchester you will study across four years, with a foundation year that builds the scientific grounding needed to engage confidently with degree-level material. You will explore the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids, learning how metabolic pathways are regulated and how genes are expressed. Practical laboratory work is central to the programme, and you will develop skills in techniques that are standard across modern biological research, from spectroscopy and chromatography to molecular cloning and cell culture.

You will learn to design experiments, analyse data critically, and communicate scientific findings clearly, which are transferable capabilities valued well beyond the laboratory.

Biochemistry graduates are well placed for a wide range of careers. Many move into pharmaceutical research, biotechnology or clinical research organisations, working on drug discovery, development or testing. Others pursue roles in food science, agrochemistry or environmental monitoring.

Teaching, science writing and patent law are further paths that suit those with broad scientific literacy. Postgraduate study is a natural progression for those drawn to academic or industrial research, with master's and doctoral programmes available across biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology and related disciplines. The analytical and problem-solving skills developed on this course are also recognised in sectors such as finance, consultancy and public health.
