About this course

Biochemistry investigates life at the molecular level, using the tools of chemistry to understand the processes that sustain living organisms from the inside. It examines how proteins fold and catalyse reactions, how DNA is copied and expressed, how cells signal to one another, how metabolism converts food to energy, and how these processes go wrong in disease. The questions it addresses are central to medicine, drug discovery, agriculture, and our understanding of evolution, and the techniques it develops, from spectroscopy and chromatography to gene editing and structural biology, are among the most powerful in modern science.

At Newcastle University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, combining extensive professional experience with international academic exposure. You will develop a rigorous grounding in the chemistry of biological molecules, metabolic biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, cell biology, and the experimental methods used to investigate them, before moving into more specialist areas as the degree progresses. The sandwich year allows you to work in a research laboratory, pharmaceutical company, or biotechnology firm, building professional skills and making connections in the sector.
