Biochemistry
Biochemistry is the science of the chemistry of living systems. It investigates the molecular processes underlying metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to the environment, giving us the fundamental understanding of life that makes modern medicine and biotechnology possible. From the mechanisms of enzyme catalysis to the regulation of gene expression and the molecular basis of disease, biochemistry provides the conceptual framework through which biology becomes chemistry, and through which chemistry becomes the key to life.
At the University of Salford this part-time programme makes biochemistry accessible to students who cannot commit to full-time study, giving you the flexibility to combine your degree with work or other commitments. You will study the chemical foundations of biological systems, including protein structure and function, nucleic acids and molecular genetics, metabolism, and cell signalling, alongside the laboratory and analytical techniques that biochemists use to investigate these processes. Salford's applied orientation ensures that the programme connects biochemical knowledge to the industries that depend on it, from medicine and agriculture to food science and healthcare.
The knowledge and methods developed by biochemists are applied across all fields of medicine and agriculture as well as many chemical and health-related industries, and the degree reflects that breadth.
Biochemistry graduates go on to careers in pharmaceutical research, clinical biochemistry, food science, environmental science, biotechnology, healthcare, and academic research. The analytical and laboratory skills you develop transfer well into many other fields, including science communication, regulatory affairs, and quality management. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, or related disciplines, building on the rigorous scientific foundation that the undergraduate degree provides.
