About this course

Biochemistry investigates the chemical processes that underlie all living things, examining how proteins fold and function, how energy is generated and used within cells, how genetic information is stored and expressed, and how biological molecules interact to produce the processes of life. It is one of the most dynamic areas in modern science, at the frontier of medicine, biotechnology, and our fundamental understanding of living systems. As tools for investigating biology at the molecular level become increasingly powerful, biochemistry sits at the centre of advances from new drug targets to gene therapy and synthetic biology.

At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time degree places you in the laboratory from the start of your first year, giving you hands-on practical experience alongside the conceptual content of the degree. You will develop skills in recording, analysing, and interpreting experimental data, communicating complex scientific topics, and working effectively as part of a team, all of which are central to professional practice in the life sciences. The programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported introduction for students who want to build their scientific foundation before progressing to the full honours degree.

A placement or work experience year is also available, as is a year abroad, both of which add professional experience and international perspective to your studies.

You will study the core areas of biochemistry including metabolism, protein structure and function, molecular biology, genetics, and cell biology, alongside quantitative methods and the analytical chemistry that underpins the study of biological molecules. Research skills are developed throughout, culminating in independent project work.

Graduates pursue careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research and development, clinical biochemistry, biomedical research, food science, environmental science, and science communication. Many go on to postgraduate study, including doctoral research in biochemistry or related disciplines, or professional training in medicine, pharmacy, or other healthcare sciences.
