About this course

Biochemistry is the chemistry of living systems, the science that explains how molecules work together to build, power, and regulate every cell in every organism. It sits at the intersection of biology and chemistry, and its insights underpin modern medicine, drug discovery, and biotechnology. Adding entrepreneurship to the degree reflects a growing recognition that scientific knowledge becomes most powerful when combined with the ability to create and develop new ventures.

At the University of Manchester you will explore the molecular mechanisms behind cellular processes, including enzyme activity, metabolic pathways, protein structure and function, gene expression, and signal transduction. You will gain practical laboratory skills alongside theoretical understanding, learning to design experiments, analyse data, and interpret results in the context of current research questions. The entrepreneurship strand introduces you to the principles of innovation, commercialisation, intellectual property, and business development, helping you understand how scientific discoveries move from the laboratory into products and services that reach patients and consumers.

You will engage with real challenges in translating research into practice and develop the confidence to think about science not just as a body of knowledge but as a source of opportunity.

The programme runs over four years full time and includes a foundation year, giving you a thorough grounding in the core sciences before you move into the more advanced biochemistry content. This makes it an excellent route if you are coming from a non-traditional background or need to build your scientific foundations before diving into degree-level study.

Graduates go on to careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical research, diagnostics, and scientific consultancy, as well as founding or joining early-stage science companies. Many progress to postgraduate study, including research degrees, clinical training, and professional qualifications in medicine, dentistry, or law with a science specialism.
