About this course

Biochemistry examines the chemical processes that sustain life at the molecular level. It sits at the intersection of biology and chemistry, providing the molecular understanding of how genes are expressed and regulated, how proteins are made and function, how cells metabolise energy, and how these processes are disrupted in disease. As the biological and pharmaceutical sciences have become increasingly dependent on molecular-level knowledge, biochemistry has become a foundational discipline for drug discovery, diagnostics, biotechnology and our understanding of health and disease.

At the University of Westminster you will study biochemistry over four years of full-time study, beginning with a foundation year that builds the scientific foundations in chemistry, biology and mathematics before you progress to the degree content. This foundation year makes the programme well suited to students who want to strengthen their scientific preparation before engaging with biochemistry at degree level. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme further, adding substantial professional experience and international academic engagement.

Work placement is also integrated into the programme. The typical tariff of 104 reflects a programme designed to be genuinely accessible to students with the curiosity and commitment to succeed in a scientifically demanding discipline.

Graduates of biochemistry programmes work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical laboratories, the food and drinks industry, environmental science, forensic laboratories and research institutions. Many go on to postgraduate study, including research degrees in biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology or related fields.
