About this course

Biochemistry explores the chemical basis of life, examining the molecules that make up living organisms and the reactions that sustain them. From the way enzymes catalyse the thousands of chemical reactions occurring simultaneously in every living cell, to the mechanisms by which genes are transcribed and translated into proteins, to the signalling cascades that coordinate the behaviour of tissues and organisms, biochemistry reveals the molecular logic that underlies biology. It is a discipline central to medicine, drug discovery, environmental science, and biotechnology.

At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year programme includes a foundation year designed to ensure you have the scientific foundations in biology, chemistry, and mathematics needed to engage fully with the main degree. The foundation year is a genuine bridge, giving students who are ready for biochemistry intellectually but who need additional preparation in the sciences the opportunity to build that foundation in a supportive environment. You will then study the core areas of biochemistry including molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, metabolic biochemistry, and the experimental techniques that are central to modern biochemical research.

NTU is a research-active institution with strong industry connections, and the programme benefits from laboratory facilities and staff with expertise across the biochemical sciences. A typical entry tariff of 104 points, taken together with the foundation year, makes the programme accessible to students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Biochemistry graduates pursue careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical science, the NHS, science communication, the food industry, environmental agencies, and education. Many continue to postgraduate study in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a clinical discipline, and the foundation year route is fully compatible with doctoral research programmes at leading institutions. The practical laboratory skills and analytical thinking developed across the degree are valued by employers in both science and non-science sectors.

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the …

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost of li…
