About this course

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that underpin life, examining the structure and function of the molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes and metabolic pathways that make cells and organisms work. It connects chemistry and biology at the molecular level, providing the explanatory framework for understanding how genes are expressed, how energy is produced and used, how cells communicate and how diseases develop at the molecular scale. It is a discipline at the heart of much of the most significant science of the current era, from genome editing and personalised medicine to new pharmaceutical development and advances in biotechnology.

At Keele University this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, giving you additional time to develop the chemical and biological foundations you need before entering the main three-year programme. You will have access to purpose-built laboratory facilities and will engage with an accredited curriculum that covers all the major areas of modern biochemistry, with integrated employability modules designed to help you think about and prepare for your career throughout your studies. The authentic assessments used in the programme are designed to develop the real-world scientific skills that employers and postgraduate supervisors look for.

Graduates from Biochemistry degrees go on to careers across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life sciences industries, working in research and development, drug discovery, analytical science, quality assurance and clinical biochemistry.
