About this course

Biological sciences is the study of life in all its forms, from the molecular mechanisms that underpin cellular function to the ecological processes that shape ecosystems and the evolutionary forces that have produced the diversity of living things on earth. It is one of the broadest disciplines in science, encompassing genetics, cell biology, microbiology, physiology, ecology, biochemistry, developmental biology, and evolutionary biology, and it is a subject where fundamental research is perpetually generating new knowledge with practical implications for medicine, agriculture, conservation, and the biotechnology industries.

At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme gives you a broad and rigorous grounding in the core areas of biological science before allowing you to explore specialisations in greater depth as the degree progresses. Cardiff has strong research expertise across the life sciences, and the city's proximity to a diverse range of natural environments, from the Severn Estuary to the Brecon Beacons, provides a rich context for ecology and field biology. Laboratory work is central to the degree from the first year, and you will develop a progressively sophisticated set of practical skills in molecular biology, microscopy, data analysis, and experimental design alongside your theoretical understanding.

The degree trains you to think rigorously about biological systems at multiple scales simultaneously, to design experiments, evaluate evidence, and communicate your findings clearly in written and oral form. The final year typically involves a substantial piece of independent research, which gives you the experience of conducting genuine scientific inquiry from question through methodology to interpretation.

Biological sciences graduates move into a wide range of careers. The pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical devices industries recruit graduates directly, and roles in research support, laboratory management, quality assurance, and technical sales are all accessible. Environmental consultancy, conservation work, science communication, and teaching at secondary level are other common destinations.

Postgraduate study at masters or doctoral level is a significant route for those who want to pursue research careers or move into clinical training pathways such as medicine or dentistry.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a …

Highly recommend
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links ma…
