About this course

Ecology is the scientific study of the relationships between organisms and their environments, examining how species interact with each other and with the physical and chemical conditions of the places they inhabit. It is one of the most synthetic of the biological sciences, drawing on physiology, evolution, genetics, behaviour, and earth sciences to understand patterns of distribution and abundance, the flow of energy and nutrients through ecosystems, the dynamics of populations and communities, and the responses of living systems to disturbance and change. In an era of biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, and climate change, ecology has never been more central to the scientific agenda.

At the University of Edinburgh you will study this four-year full-time degree within a broader biological sciences framework, with a specialism in ecology, and the programme includes a year abroad. That international year allows you to study or undertake fieldwork in a different ecological context, encountering habitats, species assemblages, and research traditions that are not available in the UK. Edinburgh has world-class research strengths in ecology, and you will study in an environment shaped by that research activity.

Across the programme you will study population and community ecology, ecosystem processes, conservation biology, evolutionary ecology, statistical methods for ecological data, and field survey techniques. Fieldwork is a central part of the curriculum, developing practical skills in species identification, survey design, and ecological monitoring. The typical entry tariff is 200 points.

Ecology graduates work in conservation organisations, environmental consultancy, national parks and protected area management, government agencies such as Natural England and NatureScot, research institutions, and international conservation programmes. Academic research is also a significant route, and many graduates pursue PhD programmes in ecology, conservation biology, or environmental science. The quantitative skills developed during the degree, including statistical analysis and modelling, are also increasingly valued in data-intensive roles within the environmental and life sciences sectors.
