Biological Sciences

Biological sciences encompasses the study of living organisms from the molecular to the ecological, asking how life is organised, how it functions, how it has evolved, and how it interacts with the physical and chemical environment. It is a discipline with direct relevance to some of the most pressing questions of our time: how do we develop new medicines? How do we respond to emerging infectious diseases?

How do we protect biodiversity and manage ecosystems under pressure from climate change? A degree in biological sciences provides the scientific literacy and practical skills to engage with these questions seriously.

At the University of Westminster, you will study biological sciences over three years full-time, building a solid academic foundation across the key areas of the discipline, including cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, ecology, and physiology. You will develop laboratory skills alongside the capacity for critical analysis and scientific communication that research and professional roles in biology demand. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to gain substantial professional experience in a research, pharmaceutical, or industry setting before your final year, and a year abroad is also available.

Work placement provision is embedded in the course. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points.

Biological sciences graduates go on to careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical laboratory science, environmental consultancy, public health, conservation, science education, and science communication. The research and analytical skills developed through the programme also transfer into law, management, and other fields where scientific literacy is valued. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in biology, biomedical science, ecology, medicine, or related disciplines.
