About this course

Biology is the scientific study of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the complex interactions of entire ecosystems. It encompasses a remarkable range of questions: how genes are expressed and inherited, how organisms develop from a single fertilised egg, how species evolve and diversify, how populations respond to environmental change, and how the living world can be harnessed for biotechnology and conservation. It is a discipline that demands both careful observation and rigorous analytical thinking, and its practitioners work at the frontier of some of the most important scientific and societal challenges of our time.

At Anglia Ruskin University this part-time programme gives you the breadth to engage with biology across multiple scales and traditions. You will be able to explore cell and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, and bioinformatics alongside plant science, microbiology, and biotechnology, as well as whole-organism biology, ecology, and field skills. This range ensures that you develop a genuinely comprehensive scientific foundation, including both laboratory competence and the ability to work with living organisms in natural environments.

You will learn to evaluate aspects of all life on earth and to understand the ways in which biodiversity and ecosystem function are under threat.

Biology graduates work across a wide variety of sectors. Research, whether in universities, government bodies, or industry, is one major direction. Healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, environmental management, conservation, and biotechnology are all fields that employ biologists at every level.

Scientific communication, education, and policy roles are also common. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study to specialise in a particular area of biology or to prepare for professional roles in medicine, veterinary science, or environmental consulting.
