Biology

Biology is the science of life, encompassing the study of living systems from the molecular to the ecological. It asks how cells function, how organisms develop, how species evolve, and how communities of organisms interact with each other and with their physical environment. The discipline is central to medicine, agriculture, conservation, biotechnology, and environmental science, and it provides the scientific grounding for addressing many of the most urgent challenges facing society.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, you will study biology over three years full-time, building a grounding in the biological sciences while also developing the flexibility to explore the areas that most interest you and that align with your career ambitions. You will cover core topics including cell biology, genetics, ecology, physiology, and evolution, developing both your conceptual understanding and your practical laboratory and fieldwork skills. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend a year gaining professional experience in a biological sciences or related setting before your final year, and work placement provision is built in throughout.

The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Biology graduates go on to careers across the life sciences, healthcare, and environmental sectors. Research roles in academic, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology organisations, clinical laboratory science, conservation and ecology, science communication, education, and public health are all common paths. The research design and data analysis skills developed through the programme are also valued in industries beyond biology, and many graduates use the degree as a foundation for postgraduate study in biology, ecology, biomedical science, medicine, or related fields.
