About this course

Molecular and cellular biology is the study of life at its most fundamental level, examining the molecules that make up living cells and the processes by which those molecules interact to sustain life, enable development, and respond to the environment. DNA replication, gene expression, protein synthesis, cell signalling, and the regulation of cell division are among the core processes this discipline investigates, and understanding them is essential to making sense of both normal biology and the disruptions to it that cause disease. The field is at the centre of modern biomedical research and of the biotechnology revolution that is transforming medicine.

At the University of Huddersfield, this four-year programme incorporates both a foundation year and a research placement, giving you a comprehensive pathway from introductory scientific knowledge through to practical research experience. The foundation year develops the biological and chemical understanding needed for the main degree, making the programme accessible to students who want to strengthen their scientific foundations before tackling molecular biology at undergraduate level. The main degree then builds a rigorous knowledge of cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, and molecular techniques, while the research placement, typically undertaken during the degree, provides hands-on experience working on a real research project within an academic or industrial laboratory.
