About this course

Biology is the science of life in all its complexity, from the molecular processes that drive cellular function to the ecological systems that sustain the planet. It is a discipline that connects the very small with the very large, drawing on chemistry, physics, mathematics, and environmental science to understand how living organisms work, evolve, and interact. At a moment when the world faces urgent questions about biodiversity, disease, food security, and climate change, the biological sciences have never been more important.

At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time degree gives you a thorough grounding in the core areas of biology while providing access to modern laboratory facilities including a Bioscience Superlab and research spaces that bring real-world scientific practice into your training. You will study cell biology, genetics, ecology, physiology, and evolutionary biology, developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills. A foundation year is available for those who would benefit from additional preparation before embarking on the main programme.

A sandwich year placement gives you the opportunity to gain professional experience in a biological or scientific setting, and a year abroad allows you to study in a different academic and environmental context. Work placement activity is integrated into the programme, helping you to connect your studies to career-relevant practice. A typical entry tariff of 88 points applies.

You will develop skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, and the critical evaluation of evidence, capabilities that are transferable across a wide range of scientific and non-scientific careers.

Graduates go on to work in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, environmental conservation, agriculture, biotechnology, education, and scientific research. Many pursue postgraduate study in specialist areas of biology or related disciplines, including ecology, genetics, microbiology, or biomedical science, whether through taught master's programmes or research degrees.
