About this course

Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery inside a single cell to the dynamics of entire ecosystems. It asks how living things are built, how they function, how they reproduce and change over generations, and how they interact with one another and with their environments. Few disciplines touch as directly on the challenges facing the world today, whether that is understanding and responding to disease, preserving biodiversity, feeding a growing population or developing the biotechnologies that will shape medicine and industry in coming decades.

At the University of Suffolk you will study across the core areas of the discipline, including cell biology, genetics, ecology, physiology and evolutionary biology, building a broad and integrated understanding of living systems. You will develop laboratory skills alongside theoretical knowledge, learning to design experiments, collect and analyse data, and communicate your findings in the ways that science demands. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to undertake a substantial placement in a research, conservation, environmental or industry setting and to test your skills in a professional context before you graduate.

Work placement experience is also built into the course, reinforcing the connection between academic study and real-world practice.

Graduates in biology move into a wide range of careers. Many work in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental consultancy, conservation and land management, food science, or science communication and education. Others move into research positions in universities, government agencies or the private sector, often after completing postgraduate degrees.

A biology degree from a programme that includes substantial placement experience is particularly valued by employers who want graduates with both technical knowledge and an understanding of how science operates outside the laboratory. The discipline remains one of the most versatile and consequential a student can choose.

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the cit…
