About this course

Biology is the science of life in all its variety: the molecular machinery of cells, the genetics that links generations, the ecological webs that connect organisms to each other and to their environments, and the evolutionary processes that have generated the diversity of life on Earth. It is a discipline of extraordinary breadth, and the skills it builds, including careful observation, experimental design, quantitative analysis and the ability to evaluate evidence, are as valuable in clinical, industrial and policy contexts as they are in academic research.

At the University of Sussex this three-year full-time programme is designed to be flexible, allowing you to develop a broad grounding in biology before shaping your studies around your own interests and career ambitions. You might focus on cell and molecular biology, exploring how genes are expressed, how cells communicate and how these processes go wrong in disease. Or you might concentrate on evolution and whole organism biology, examining how life adapts to its environment and how species interact across ecological communities.

There is also scope to explore aspects of neuroscience and behaviour, reflecting the breadth of contemporary biological research. The degree begins with a foundation year for those who need additional preparation before the main programme. A sandwich year, work placement opportunities and the possibility of studying abroad mean you can accumulate substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic study.

Throughout the programme you will develop critical thinking, scientific teamwork and technical communication skills, which are essential for any career in science or beyond.

Biology graduates pursue careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, healthcare, conservation, environmental management, science communication, public health, education and scientific research. Many go on to postgraduate study, whether research degrees, graduate-entry medicine or professional programmes in ecology, conservation or related fields.
