About this course

Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles and methods to the challenges of medicine and healthcare, designing the devices, systems, and technologies that help clinicians diagnose, treat, and monitor conditions, and that support or replace the functions of damaged tissues and organs. It is a genuinely interdisciplinary field, drawing on mechanical and electrical engineering, materials science, biology, and physiology to address problems at the frontier of clinical medicine and technological innovation. Prosthetics, imaging systems, implantable devices, diagnostic equipment, and rehabilitation technologies are all products of biomedical engineering thinking.

At Queen Mary University of London this four-year full-time programme develops your engineering knowledge alongside a deep understanding of the biological and medical contexts that give that knowledge its purpose. You will study the fundamentals of engineering science, including mechanics, electronics, and materials, alongside cell biology, anatomy, physiology, and medical imaging. You will learn to apply engineering analysis to questions about how the body works and how technology can support or repair it.
