About this course

Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles and methods to biology and medicine, creating technologies that transform healthcare. It is the discipline behind the diagnostic imaging equipment that reveals disease without surgery, the implantable devices that restore or replace failing physiological functions, the surgical tools that enable precision procedures, and the prosthetics that restore mobility. Biomedical engineers think like engineers but work in the complex, variable environment of living systems, requiring them to bridge the physical sciences and life sciences in a way that is both technically demanding and profoundly purposeful.

At Dundee you will study this four-year full-time programme, with a year abroad available to broaden your engineering experience in an international context. You will develop grounding in the engineering fundamentals of mechanics, materials, electronics, and systems alongside the biomedical science needed to understand the physiological contexts in which your designs will operate. You will explore areas such as biomechanics, medical imaging, biosensors, rehabilitation engineering, and the design of medical devices, developing both the analytical rigour of engineering and the creative problem-solving that medical innovation requires.

Dundee's research environment and connections to clinical medicine provide strong links between the academic programme and real healthcare challenges.

Biomedical engineering graduates work in the medical device industry, in clinical engineering roles within NHS trusts, in research institutions developing new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, and in consultancies advising on the introduction of new medical technologies. The engineering skills the degree develops are also valued in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and health technology sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in biomedical engineering, medical physics, or related biomedical sciences, while others pursue clinical roles or move into research and development in healthcare-facing industries.
