About this course

Biomedical engineering applies the principles of engineering to problems in medicine and biology, designing the devices, systems, and tools that diagnose, treat, and monitor human health. It is a discipline that sits at the interface of mechanical engineering, electronics, computing, and the biomedical sciences, bringing quantitative and design thinking to bear on some of the most important challenges in healthcare. From imaging systems and prosthetic limbs to implantable devices and diagnostic sensors, biomedical engineers create the technologies that improve and save lives.

Nottingham Trent University's four-year full-time degree in biomedical engineering includes a foundation year, giving students who need to build their scientific and mathematical foundations an integrated pathway into the full degree programme. The foundation year makes the degree accessible to a wider range of students while ensuring that everyone who progresses is thoroughly prepared for the engineering and biomedical content that follows. You will study mechanics, materials science, electronics, signal processing, biomechanics, cell and molecular biology, physiology, medical imaging, and design engineering, developing both the technical skills of an engineer and the biological understanding needed to apply them in medical contexts.

The programme prepares you to design and evaluate medical devices, work with clinical data, and understand the regulatory environment in which biomedical technologies are developed and used.

Graduates in biomedical engineering go on to work in medical device companies, the NHS, healthcare technology, research and development, clinical engineering, and regulatory affairs. The combination of engineering rigour and biomedical knowledge is valued across a growing sector driven by population ageing, technological innovation, and the increasing complexity of healthcare. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study or doctoral research, developing specialist expertise in areas such as neural engineering, tissue engineering, or medical imaging.
