Biomedical Science

Biomedical science is the application of biological and chemical knowledge to the understanding of health and disease. It sits at the interface between the fundamental life sciences and clinical medicine, investigating the mechanisms through which diseases develop, how the body responds to infection and injury, and how diagnostic tests and treatments work at the molecular, cellular and physiological levels. Biomedical scientists working in NHS and private laboratory services perform the diagnostic tests that underpin the majority of clinical decisions, making the profession indispensable to the healthcare system.

At Bangor University this programme runs full time over four years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you a substantial period of practical laboratory and professional experience alongside your academic studies. These opportunities to work in real laboratory or research environments are central to the discipline, where practical skills in sample analysis, quality control and scientific method are as important as theoretical knowledge. You will study the major biomedical sciences, including haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cellular pathology and pharmacology, developing both scientific understanding and the practical laboratory skills that define professional practice.

You will be trained to work accurately and systematically with biological samples, to apply quality management principles and to interpret laboratory data in a clinical context. The programme also develops your understanding of the ethical, regulatory and professional frameworks within which biomedical scientists operate.

Graduates from accredited biomedical science programmes can apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as Biomedical Scientists and work in NHS diagnostic laboratories, private healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry, public health organisations and research. Postgraduate study in clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, haematology, immunology or biomedical research is also a well-established route for those seeking specialist or research-oriented careers.
