About this course

Biomedical science is the laboratory-based discipline that underpins modern medicine, investigating the biological and chemical mechanisms of disease and developing the diagnostic and therapeutic tools that clinicians depend on. Where medical students learn to treat patients, biomedical scientists learn to understand, at a cellular and molecular level, what has gone wrong and how it might be detected or corrected. The field spans microbiology, haematology, clinical biochemistry, immunology, and cellular pathology, all of which are represented within the diagnostic laboratories of the National Health Service and the research departments of hospitals and universities.

At Cardiff University, this three-year degree gives you a rigorous scientific education across all the major biomedical disciplines. You will study human physiology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, and pharmacology, developing a deep understanding of how the body functions and how disease disrupts those functions. Laboratory work is central to the programme, and you will build hands-on skills in techniques used both in clinical diagnostic settings and in research environments.

Biomedical science graduates have several clear professional routes.
