Biomedical Science

Biomedical science is dedicated to understanding the biological and chemical processes that underpin human health, and to applying that understanding to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. It is the discipline behind the laboratory tests that diagnose infections and cancers, the research that identifies new therapeutic targets, and the quality assurance systems that ensure clinical samples are reliable. This three-year full-time BSc at Sheffield Hallam University includes a foundation year entry route, a sandwich placement year, and work placement experience, giving you multiple pathways and substantial practical engagement alongside your academic learning.

You will develop skills in haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, and immunology, working in state-of-the-art research facilities and learning to apply scientific techniques to real clinical questions. The programme prepares you for registration as a biomedical scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is the standard qualification for NHS laboratory roles. The sandwich year gives you the opportunity to develop professional experience in a clinical or research setting before your final year, deepening your technical competence and your understanding of how the discipline operates in practice.

Sheffield Hallam also offers a widening access to medicine pathway for eligible students, and the option to transfer to a more research-intensive master's route later in your studies.

A typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects a broad and inclusive admissions standard. Graduates from biomedical science programmes work in NHS clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, public health agencies, medical device development, and academic research. Many pursue HCPC registration and build careers as registered biomedical scientists, while others continue to postgraduate study in biomedical research, clinical science, or medicine itself.
