About this course

Biomedical science is the discipline that underpins modern medicine. It applies the methods of biology, biochemistry, and related sciences to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease, to develop and improve diagnostic tests, and to evaluate new therapies. Biomedical scientists are the professionals who carry out the laboratory investigations that underpin clinical diagnosis, and the research that drives medical progress, making the discipline central to healthcare systems and to the life sciences industry.

At Teesside University, this three-year full-time degree gives you a grounding in the core sciences that support biomedical understanding. You will develop knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, exploring how the body's organ systems function and how homeostasis, the maintenance of stable internal conditions, is regulated across them. You will study cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, and haematology, building the scientific literacy needed to understand how these systems go wrong in disease and how laboratory methods are used to detect and characterise those changes.

The curriculum is designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills, preparing you for work in clinical and research settings.

Biomedical science graduates are valued across a range of healthcare and research environments for their combination of scientific rigour and applied laboratory competence.

Graduates go on to work as biomedical scientists in NHS or private laboratories, contributing to pathology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, and haematology services.
