Biomedical Science
Biomedical Science is the discipline that applies the tools and methods of biology and chemistry to understanding the human body in health and disease. It encompasses a wide range of specialisms including haematology, clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, immunology, and cellular pathology, all of which contribute directly to the diagnostic and monitoring processes that underpin clinical medicine. Biomedical scientists work at the interface of laboratory science and healthcare, and their expertise is essential to the accurate diagnosis of conditions ranging from infection and cancer to metabolic disorders and genetic disease.
At Teesside University, this part-time programme gives you flexibility in how you manage your studies, making it accessible to students who are already working in healthcare or science settings or who have other commitments alongside their learning. You will develop a grounding in human anatomy and the physiological mechanisms that regulate the major organ systems, exploring how homeostasis is maintained and what happens when those regulatory processes fail. You will also study the biological basis of human identification and the forensic and ethical dimensions of working with human biological material, reflecting the breadth of contexts in which biomedical knowledge is applied.
The programme builds the scientific understanding that underpins a career in clinical or research biomedical science.
Graduates of Biomedical Science move into roles as trainee biomedical scientists in NHS diagnostic laboratories, pursuing registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, as well as into research, pharmaceutical, and clinical roles in the private sector. Many pursue further qualifications or postgraduate study in biomedical science, clinical research, or related fields. The part-time structure makes the programme particularly well suited to students who are already working in healthcare-adjacent roles and want to develop their scientific qualifications while continuing in employment.
