About this course

Biomedical science is the laboratory-based health profession at the heart of modern clinical medicine. Biomedical scientists analyse the blood, tissue, and body fluid samples that doctors and other clinicians need to diagnose and monitor disease, performing the tests that underpin the vast majority of clinical decisions in the NHS and other healthcare systems. Working across specialisms including haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, histopathology, immunology, and transfusion science, biomedical scientists apply scientific methods to questions of direct clinical importance.

The University of Plymouth's three-year full-time Biomedical Science degree includes a foundation year and a sandwich year with work placement opportunities, carrying a typical entry tariff of 136 points. The foundation year introduces the key anatomical features of the body and the physiological principles that underpin health and disease, beginning with cell and tissue biology, genetics, embryology, and human development, before progressing through the anatomy and physiology of the major organ systems. The main degree then builds on this foundation to develop your understanding of the laboratory sciences, professional practice, and clinical applications that define the role of the biomedical scientist.

Work placements in NHS or independent laboratories give you hands-on experience in a professional clinical laboratory setting.

Graduation from an accredited programme and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council allows you to work as a biomedical scientist in NHS trusts, private pathology laboratories, research institutions, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Many graduates develop specialist expertise in a particular discipline and progress into senior roles, education, or management. Postgraduate study in a biomedical science specialism, clinical research, or healthcare science is a natural further step for those wanting to develop deeper expertise.
