About this course

Biomedical science is the study of the biological basis of human health and disease. It is a discipline concerned with understanding how the human body works at the molecular, cellular, and systems level, how disease processes disrupt that functioning, and how we can develop diagnostic tools and treatments to identify and address illness. Biomedical scientists work at the frontier of medical knowledge, combining laboratory science with clinical application, and their expertise underpins much of modern healthcare through the development of diagnostic tests, the discovery of new drugs, and the investigation of infectious diseases.

At the University of Warwick, this BSc programme is taught within the School of Life Sciences and will appeal to those interested in how the human body works and how it can go wrong, as well as infectious diseases and the microorganisms that cause them. You will study cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, and pathology, developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills. The programme includes an industrial placement year, giving you the opportunity to work in a relevant professional environment, whether in a pharmaceutical company, hospital laboratory, research institute, or biotech organisation, developing your skills and professional networks in a real working context.

Graduates from biomedical science degrees move into careers in NHS clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, regulatory affairs, medical devices, clinical research, and academic research. Many go on to postgraduate study, including doctoral research, to develop deeper expertise or move into academic careers. The degree also provides a foundation for graduate entry to medicine or dentistry for students who wish to pursue clinical practice.
