About this course

Biomedical sciences explore the biological processes that underlie human health and disease. It is a discipline that bridges basic science and clinical medicine, drawing on cell biology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, immunology and pathology to understand why the body functions as it does and what goes wrong in illness. Studying it gives you a rigorous scientific education and an appreciation of how laboratory research connects to diagnosis, treatment and the development of new therapies.

At the University of Liverpool, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and broaden your scientific and personal horizons. Across the degree you will develop both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills, learning to design experiments, handle data critically and communicate scientific findings clearly. You will engage with contemporary research questions in areas such as cancer biology, infection and immunity, neuroscience and cardiovascular disease, building the analytical and investigative habits that characterise good scientific practice.

Graduates in biomedical sciences are well placed for a wide range of careers. Many enter scientific roles in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, working in research and development, quality assurance, regulatory affairs or clinical trials. Others move into laboratory and diagnostic roles in the NHS or in private healthcare.

The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study, including research degrees, graduate-entry medicine, dentistry or other health professions. Some graduates move into science communication, policy or education, where their combination of specialist knowledge and analytical skill is valued. The field is broad, and the career options reflect that breadth.
