About this course

Biomedical sciences is the field of study that examines the biological and chemical processes underlying human health and disease, providing the scientific foundation on which clinical medicine, drug discovery, diagnostic testing and public health practice depend. It is a discipline that works at the interface of biology, chemistry and medicine, asking how cells function, how the body maintains homeostasis, how pathogens cause disease and how the immune system responds, and how these insights translate into the diagnostic tools and therapies that modern healthcare depends upon.

At Anglia Ruskin University this three-year, full-time programme develops your understanding across the core areas of biomedical science, including cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pathology, haematology and pharmacology. You will develop strong practical laboratory skills alongside your theoretical knowledge, learning the techniques of experimental biomedical science in well-equipped facilities. The programme provides a foundation that supports progression into a wide range of careers in the life sciences sector and the NHS.

Additional options including placement and foundation year are available, and you can discuss the most appropriate combination for your circumstances when you apply.

Biomedical science graduates pursue careers as biomedical scientists in NHS diagnostic laboratories with appropriate registration, in pharmaceutical research and development, biotechnology companies, clinical research organisations, academic research and medical diagnostics. Professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist is a common pathway for those working in NHS laboratories, typically following a period of accredited training and portfolio completion. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in biomedical science, molecular biology, clinical research, medicine or a related health science field.

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the integration between pre-clinical teaching and placements is well designed. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with…

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant stude…
