About this course

Developmental biology is the science of how a fertilised egg gives rise to the complexity of a fully formed organism, and the biomedical sciences programme at the University of Aberdeen with a developmental biology specialisation takes that question seriously from both fundamental and clinical angles. The processes of cell differentiation, tissue patterning, organogenesis, and growth are among the most remarkable in biology, and understanding them has profound implications for medicine, including the treatment of developmental disorders, the potential of stem cell therapies, and the biology of cancer, which in many ways represents a breakdown of normal developmental regulation.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time programme follows the Scottish honours structure and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with developmental biology in an international research or teaching environment. The academic curriculum covers cell and molecular biology, genetics, embryology, developmental genetics, stem cell biology, and the experimental methods used to investigate developmental processes in model organisms and human tissues. Laboratory work is central from the beginning, developing your practical skills in microscopy, cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and developmental assays.
