About this course

Biomedical sciences is the collective term for the laboratory-based disciplines that underpin modern medicine, providing the scientific foundation for clinical diagnosis, therapeutic development and medical research. It brings together knowledge from cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology and pathology to understand how the human body functions in health and how those processes are disrupted in disease. Biomedical scientists work in hospital laboratories, research institutions and pharmaceutical companies, generating the evidence that clinicians and researchers depend on and contributing to the development of new diagnostic approaches and treatments.

At the University of Bath you will study biomedical sciences over three years of full-time study, developing deep knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying human health and disease. You will engage with the molecular, cellular and physiological dimensions of biomedical science, developing laboratory skills in techniques used in clinical and research settings alongside the conceptual understanding needed to interpret and apply experimental findings. Options in science communication, ethics and current topics give you the flexibility to engage with the broader dimensions of biomedical science, including the ethical questions that arise in clinical research and the communication challenges of translating scientific findings for different audiences.
