Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical sciences is the study of the human body in health and disease, integrating knowledge of human physiology, anatomy, cell biology, genetics, immunology, pharmacology, and the biological basis of illness. It is the discipline that underpins modern medicine and healthcare, providing the scientific foundations for diagnosis, treatment, and the development of new therapies. At the University of Leeds, you will become an expert in this rapidly growing field, developing an integrated knowledge of how organs, tissues, and cells work together and what goes wrong in disease.

This three-year full-time programme combines theoretical study with substantial practical laboratory work from the outset. You will develop hands-on skills in clinical laboratory techniques alongside the analytical thinking needed to interpret biological data and communicate your findings. The programme covers the major body systems, the diseases that affect them, and the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches used in clinical practice.

Alongside this core content, you will engage with research methods and develop the scientific literacy to read and evaluate the primary literature in the field.

The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, making this a richly structured programme that gives you professional experience across multiple contexts before you graduate. The year abroad in particular exposes you to biomedical science as practised in different healthcare and research systems. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates from biomedical sciences programmes are eligible to register as biomedical scientists with the Health and Care Professions Council following appropriate placement training. Careers include hospital laboratory work in haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and histopathology, as well as research roles in universities, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology firms. Further study options include master's degrees, doctoral research, and clinical scientist training programmes.
