About this course

Biomedicine is the scientific study of the biological and chemical processes that underlie human health and disease, sitting at the boundary between basic science and clinical medicine. It draws on cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, and immunology to investigate how the body functions at a fundamental level and how disease disrupts those functions. As a discipline, biomedicine is the scientific engine of modern healthcare, underpinning the development of new drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutic approaches that transform medical practice.

At Aston University, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing a rich range of professional and international experiences that complement the academic curriculum. Aston has strong connections with the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries in the Midlands and nationally, and the placement year in particular offers extended hands-on experience in a research, clinical, or industrial setting, which is highly valued by employers and can significantly strengthen career prospects. You will study core biomedical subjects including molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology, developing both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills.

Aston's research-active faculty and well-equipped laboratory facilities provide a stimulating environment for biomedical study.

Graduates in biomedicine from Aston go on to careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical laboratories, medical device development, healthcare science, public health, science communication, and regulatory affairs. Some pursue postgraduate study in biomedical science, pharmacology, molecular medicine, or research degrees that can lead to careers in academic or industrial science. The combination of scientific training, industry placement experience, and international exposure that this programme provides makes graduates particularly competitive in the biomedical jobs market.

Mixed but mostly good
There's a lot to love, but it's not without its flaws. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city …

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On th…
