About this course

Bioscience with management is a degree for students who want to develop genuine scientific knowledge without losing sight of the professional and commercial world in which that science operates. Bioscience at degree level encompasses cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology and physiology, building a thorough understanding of living systems at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels. Management education develops your understanding of organisations, strategy, finance and leadership.

The combination is particularly well suited to a life sciences sector in which scientists increasingly need to understand business, and business people increasingly need to understand science.

At Birkbeck, this three-year full-time programme gives you a grounding in the fundamental knowledge and applications of modern bioscience alongside the core concepts of management. You will study biological systems with rigour, developing laboratory skills and the analytical thinking that biological research demands. Alongside this, you will engage with management theory and practice, developing your understanding of how organisations function and how decisions are made in commercial and institutional contexts.

Birkbeck's particular strengths in evening and flexible study mean the institution attracts a diverse student community, and the degree benefits from this mix of perspectives.

Graduates are well placed for roles at the interface of science and business. Research support, project management, regulatory affairs, science communication, laboratory management, business development in life sciences companies, and roles in healthcare procurement and commissioning are all natural destinations. The combination of technical credibility and management awareness is valued by pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, NHS trusts and research organisations.

Postgraduate study in bioscience, biotechnology, management or healthcare management is also a well-supported option.

Highly recommend
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant s…

Would do it again
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant stude…
