About this course

Biotechnology is one of the most exciting and consequential frontiers in modern science, applying the principles of biology, chemistry and engineering to develop new medicines, diagnostic tools, agricultural technologies, industrial processes and environmental solutions. From genetically engineered therapies that treat cancer to microorganisms engineered to break down plastics, biotechnology is transforming what is possible in medicine, agriculture and manufacturing. A degree in the subject places you at the heart of this transformation, developing the scientific rigour and practical skills needed to contribute to it.

At Imperial College London you will follow a programme that builds a shared foundation across all Biotechnology students in the first two years, covering the fundamental topics in molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, and the engineering principles that underpin the design and optimisation of biological systems. This common core gives you the solid grounding needed for the advanced specialist study that follows. Across the three years you will develop deep knowledge of molecular biology techniques, genomics, metabolic engineering, bioprocessing and the scientific methodology required to work at the research frontier.

Biotechnology graduates are in demand across a wide and growing range of sectors. The pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, agricultural biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, medical diagnostics, and biotech start-ups all recruit graduates with this level of training. Roles include research scientist, laboratory manager, regulatory affairs specialist, bioprocess engineer, and science communicator.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, pursuing an MSc or PhD in molecular biology, bioengineering, pharmacology, genomics or a related field, or continue into professional programmes in medicine, law or business where a strong life-sciences background is an asset.
