About this course

Biotechnology applies biological knowledge to practical problems, using living organisms, cells, and biological molecules to develop products and processes that benefit human health, the environment, and industry. It is one of the fastest-moving areas of applied science, driving advances in medicine, food production, environmental remediation, and sustainable materials. From the development of new vaccines and therapies to the use of microorganisms to clean up contaminated land, biotechnology is reshaping how societies address some of their most pressing challenges.

At the University of York this three-year, full-time degree explores the science and applications of biotechnology across domains that include environmental microbiology, microbial evolution, disease and medicine, food and agricultural biotechnology, and the production of fuels and industrial chemicals from biological sources. You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills, learning to work with the tools and techniques of modern molecular and cellular biology in contexts where their application to real-world problems is explicit. A sandwich year and a year abroad are built into the programme, and work placement opportunities are also available, giving you substantial experience in research or industrial settings and the chance to broaden your perspective through study or work overseas.
