British Politics and Legislative Studies

British politics and legislative studies is a degree that takes the workings of the UK's political system as its central subject, examining how Parliament functions, how parties form and compete, how legislation is made, how governments exercise power and how all of these institutions interact with each other, with civil society, and with citizens. It is a degree for students who want not only to understand politics in the abstract but to engage with how Britain's particular constitutional arrangements actually operate and have changed over time.

At the University of Hull, this four-year full-time programme distinguishes itself through a unique placement year: you spend twelve months working in Westminster, gaining direct experience of the political and legislative process from inside Parliament, a government department, a political party or a public affairs organisation. This is not a standard work placement but an immersion in the practical realities of British politics that very few undergraduate degrees can offer. You will study the structure of Parliament, the legislative process, political parties and ideology, public policy, electoral systems, devolution and the relationship between domestic and international politics, developing the analytical and communication skills that political careers require.

Graduates from this programme are well placed for careers in politics, the civil service, Parliament, public affairs, journalism, policy research, think tanks, lobbying, local government and the third sector. The Westminster placement year provides an exceptionally direct route into professional political life, and many graduates move into parliamentary roles, constituency work or political research immediately after graduating. Further study in politics, public policy, law or international relations is also a common next step for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
