British Sign Language, Deaf Studies and Linguistics

British Sign Language is the first or preferred language of tens of thousands of Deaf people in the UK, a fully realised human language with its own grammar, syntax, and expressive range. Deaf Studies examines the history, culture, and lived experience of Deaf communities, including the social and political struggles over language rights and inclusion that have shaped those communities. Linguistics provides the theoretical tools to understand how BSL works as a language, how it is acquired, and how it relates to spoken and written English.

Bringing the three together creates a degree that is both practically grounding and intellectually rich.

York St John University's three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad, offering a supported entry route into the degree as well as international experience later in your studies. You will develop BSL to an advanced level, which is itself a significant professional qualification in a country where fluent BSL users are in high demand. Alongside the language, you will explore the history and culture of Deaf communities in the UK, gaining an understanding of the social, educational, and political contexts that Deaf people navigate.

The linguistics strand gives you analytical tools to study language structure more broadly, applicable both to BSL and to the study of language acquisition and communication more generally. You can choose areas of focus within the programme to align your studies with your career interests.

Graduates are well positioned for careers in BSL/English interpreting (often with further professional training), Deaf education, speech and language therapy support, social work with Deaf clients, community development, and advocacy roles within Deaf organisations. Many also move into research, higher education, or public-sector roles focused on accessibility and inclusion. The combination of advanced language skills, cultural knowledge, and linguistic understanding is genuinely rare and increasingly valued as awareness of Deaf culture and the rights of Deaf people grows.
