About this course

Broadcast journalism is the craft of finding, verifying and communicating stories through audio and visual media, working to inform and engage audiences in real time under the pressure of constant deadlines. Television and radio journalism have been transformed by digital technology, with online platforms, podcasting, video streaming and social media expanding the range of formats and audiences that broadcast journalists must navigate. The fundamental skills, however, remain constant: the ability to identify a story, gather and verify information, interview effectively and communicate clearly and compellingly to an audience.

At Nottingham Trent University this three-year programme develops those skills through intensive practical training alongside the journalism knowledge and critical understanding the industry demands. You will learn to report, write, record and produce content for television, radio and digital platforms, developing fluency across different formats and an instinct for what makes a story work in each medium. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placements, giving you substantial professional experience in broadcast newsrooms and production environments before you graduate.

These opportunities are central to the course: broadcast journalism is a field where practical portfolio and direct industry experience are often more decisive in hiring than academic qualification alone, and NTU's industry connections support meaningful placements.

Graduates work across broadcast and digital media as reporters, correspondents, producers, video journalists, radio presenters, podcast producers and digital content editors. The skills you develop are also valued in corporate and public sector communications, where video and audio content production is increasingly important. Some graduates specialise in particular areas of journalism such as politics, sport, business or international affairs.

Others move into production, editorial management or digital strategy roles as their careers develop. Postgraduate study in journalism is an option for those who want to specialise further or transition into academic research on media.
