About this course

Building surveying is the professional discipline concerned with the technical assessment, maintenance, and management of the built environment. Building surveyors evaluate the condition of existing structures, advise on construction defects and repairs, manage building projects, and ensure that developments comply with legal and technical requirements. It is a career that sits at the practical heart of the property and construction industry, combining scientific rigour with professional judgment and client-facing communication.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this part-time programme gives you the knowledge and technical skills to work professionally in building surveying. You will learn how to evaluate the design, specification, and performance of buildings, developing the ability to inspect structures systematically, identify defects, and propose appropriate remedies. The curriculum covers construction technology, building pathology, contract administration, project management, and the legal frameworks governing property and construction.

You will use industry-standard equipment to carry out investigations and diagnose technical problems, developing the hands-on competence that the profession demands alongside a solid theoretical grounding. The part-time mode makes this programme well suited to those who are already working in the industry or related fields and wish to formalise and extend their knowledge while continuing in employment.

You will develop skills in technical report writing, client communication, and professional negotiation, all of which are central to practice as a surveyor. Understanding how buildings fail, and how failures can be prevented or remedied, gives graduates a perspective that is valuable across many aspects of the built environment sector.

Building surveying graduates go on to work in private consultancies, housing associations, local authorities, construction companies, and property management firms. The path to Chartered Surveyor status through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is a natural progression. Many graduates also move into project management, development management, or facility management roles.

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the studio culture is incredible β€” you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots…

A great decision
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is a b…
