About this course

Building surveying is the professional discipline concerned with the condition, performance, and legal status of buildings throughout their life cycle. Building surveyors advise on the construction, repair, maintenance, and adaptation of buildings, and they play a central role in transactions, disputes, and development projects involving property. The work demands both technical knowledge of how buildings are constructed and how they fail, and practical judgment in assessing and advising on complex situations where structural, legal, and financial considerations all come into play.

At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placements, making professional experience a core part of the degree rather than an optional extra. You will spend time working within a building surveying practice or organisation, applying the knowledge and skills you develop in lectures and studios to real buildings and real clients. The programme covers the technical principles of construction and building pathology alongside the professional practice of surveying, including contract management, procurement, planning and building regulations, and dispute resolution.

Brighton's location in the South East means you will study in a region with a rich and diverse built environment, from Victorian terraces to modern commercial developments. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the programme's welcoming approach to students from a range of backgrounds.

Building surveying graduates are well placed to pursue professional qualification with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and many begin working towards this immediately on graduation. Careers span private surveying practices, property companies, local authorities, housing associations, contractors, and the public sector. Specialist areas within building surveying include dilapidations, conservation, project management, and expert witness work.

The combination of technical expertise and professional experience this programme provides gives graduates a strong foundation for a rewarding and varied career in the built environment.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the studio culture is incredible β€” you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transp…

A great decision
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: critique sessions are tough but push your work to the next level. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant st…
