Bulgarian and Dutch

Bulgarian and Dutch is an unusual but intellectually rewarding combination, bringing together a South Slavic language spoken primarily in Bulgaria and the Balkans with a West Germanic language that is the native tongue of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname and one of the closest relatives of English. Studying two less commonly taught languages together is a demanding and distinctive choice, one that opens access to cultures and literatures that remain largely opaque to those without the linguistic key.

At University College London you will develop genuine proficiency in both Bulgarian and Dutch over four years full time, building the ability to read literature, engage with media and primary sources, and communicate with native speakers of both languages. Alongside language learning you will study the histories, literatures, and cultural traditions of the societies where these languages are spoken, from the complex history of Bulgaria and its position at the intersection of Slavic, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences, to the history of the Low Countries and the Dutch-speaking world's extraordinary contribution to trade, art, and philosophy.
